Sandplay Therapy

Sandplay therapy is a nonverbal therapeutic method for both children and adults, although Dr. Thompson reserves it primarily for her child clients. It is based upon C.G. Jung’s theories of psychology and symbolism, and boasts a long and distinguished history dating back to the 1930s. First developed by London pediatrician Margaret Lowenfeld, and further refined by Jungian analyst Dora Kalff, sandplay is practiced in a variety of settings – including therapy practices, hospitals, and schools – in 22 countries around the world.

Fees for child therapy are the same as for adult therapy. Please see the Rates and Insurance page for more information.

What Dr. Thompson has to say about sandplay therapy:

“I am an associate of Sandplay Therapists of America (STA), and practice using the philosophies and techniques of this distinguished organization. The type of sandplay I offer is distinct from other types of play therapy offered in the Lubbock area. It relies on Jung’s principles of symbolic representation, the self-healing capacities of the human spirit, and a therapy environment that fosters unconditional acceptance and nonjudgment.”

“In a typical child therapy session, I will spend half the time with the parent or parents, hearing what is happening with the child at home and at school. The children’s play room is positioned so that the child can always see the parents, but cannot hear what is being discussed. Adolescents who are participating in sandplay therapy may choose to wait in the waiting room or may be brought into the talk therapy portion of the hour.”

“The other half of the hour I spend with the child — talking, building a relationship, and supporting them as they work out their inner conflicts in the sand tray.”
